When Fashion Loves Art- H&M Opens Museum Inspired Store On Fifth Avenue
Swedish retailer H&M continues to wow the New York fashion crowd by opening a museum-inspired flagship store highlighting a remarkable collaboration with American artist Jeff Koons this summer. The 57,000 square foot space located at 589 Fifth Avenue at 48th street scheduled for a July 17th unveiling boasts six floors with a five-story atrium and 26′ x 20′ LED screen. Decorated with green and white marble tiles, herringbone wood work and equipped with concierge service will create a unique H&M experience on Fifth Avenue.
The store opening will coincide with the Whitney Museum of American Art’s “Jeff Koons: A Retrospective” Exhibit on June 27th– October 19th in which H&M sponsors. The retrospective will be Koon’s first major museum presentation in New York, and will also be the last exhibition before the Museum opens in the Meatpacking District in 2015. Jeff Koons created a limited edition Balloon Dog leather handbag that will be sold at the opening of 589 Fifth Avenue and select stores across the United States including Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas and online at hm.com. Limited quantities will also be sold at the Whitney during the Retrospective. “The partnership with H&M was really exciting for me and the chance to showcase one of my most popular works to a new generation of people was inspiring. H&M delivers great fashion season after season and it’s nice to see my work at their new store,” noted Jeff Koons. For the opening, the Yellow Balloon Dog will be blown up to cover the store’s windows with the message “Fashion Loves Art” written across the storefront facade.

Model Behavior: Karlie Kloss Teams Up With Eyewear Company Warby Parker
Monday night Karlie Kloss fêted the launch of her new collaboration with Warby Parker with an intimate dinner party held at Fleurs Bella in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Guests were treated to entrees including a pan roasted Atlantic Hake and delectable Karlie’s Kookies ice cream sandwiches for dessert. Loss teamed up with the eyewear compnay’s cofounders Neil Blumenthal and Dave Gilboa on a capsule collection consisting of three sunglasses: Julia, Marple, and Clara retailing for $145. The sunglasses are ultra-strong and lightweight made of Japanese titanium in silver and gold. The frames feature gradient lenses, available in Violet Clover, Sepia Wash, Faded Slate, Copper Fade, and Indigo Wash. Edible Schoolyard NYC, an organization that Kloss supports will benefit in the sale of the Karlie Kloss x Warby Parker sunglasses. The capsule collection is available online and at Warby Parker boutiques.
Last week, the Council of Fashion Designers of America celebrated the winners and honorees of the 2014 CFDAFashion Awards in collaboration with Swarovski at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. The affair hosted by film director and screenwriter John Waters, recognizes the top creative talent in the industry. “The CFDA believes in designers at every stage of their career, “ noted CFDA CEO Steven Kolb, “ We recognized a broad range of talent and influence from student scholarship winners and emerging talent to industry icons.”
We announced the nominees earlier this spring and now here are the winners…. The Womenswear Designer of the Year award went to Joseph Altuzarra for his label Altuzarra. The Menswear Designer of the Year award went to MaxwellOsborne and Dao-Yi Chow for their label Public School. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were awarded Accessories Designer of the Year for The Row.
Anna Wintour presented Rihanna with this year’s Fashion Icon award. The Swarovski Awards were given to Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters of Creatures Of the Wind in the Womenswear category, Tim Coppens for Menswear, and Irene Neuwirth for Accessory Design. Each category will receive financial support from Swarovski and exposure to the company’s crystal products and applications for fashion.
Tom Ford received The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award for his creative influence on fashion. A special live tribute highlighting sixteen models of color paid homage to Bethann Hardison, this year’s Founder’s Award honoree for advocating diversity on the fashion runways. Diane von Furstenberg presented the Board of Directors’ Tribute to Fashion Calendar founder and publisher, Ruth Finley. The Media Award in honor of Eugenia Sheppard was presented to PaulCavaco and the International Award was presented to Raf Simons of Christian Dior. Congratulations to all of the winners and honorees.
