DIFFA’S Picnic By Design Takes On Broadway
Each September, as New York City is abuzz with action during the whirlwind Fashion Week, another favorite design event is happening in New York’s most popular destination, Times Square. DIFFA, (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) recently held their 7thAnnual Picnic By Design affair at the Viacom Terraces and Lounge. The event celebrates the creative expression involving extravagant picnic baskets fashioned by designers while raising funds to support the fight against HIV/AIDS. This year’s theme was Broadway, and raised close to $60,000. Designers decorated attractive picnic experiences featuring interpretations of Broadway’s classic and Tony-award winning shows featuring sparkle, honey, and a little razzle-dazzle.
Over 20 Broadway-themed picnic baskets were produced for guests to bid on from designers including Vanessa Deleon, Patrick J. Hamilton, Tyler Wisler and Mikel Welch. Baskets ranging from Donna Summer, Frozen, Mean Girls and Dear Evan Hansen included backstage passes to shows, wine and spirits, exclusive Broadway gift cards and dining experiences at NYC’s top restaurants.
“This year we challenged our designers to reimagine a staple in New York City culture by incorporating a Broadway theme in the creation of their designer picnic baskets, “ noted Dawn Roberson, Executive Director at DIFFA. “We are thankful to have the support of so many talented designers along with Cindy Allen, Chair of the Board of Trustees, David Rockwell of Rockwell Group, Tom Viola, Executive Director Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Viacom, O&M and the Shubert Organization; who collectively helped to make this event an extraordinary success.”
This year’s sponsors included AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Brooklyn Brewery, Catskill Provisions, Hunter Douglas, National Kitchen & Bath Association, Robert Allen Duralee Group, Transwall, and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.
