Drunken Munkey Serves The Best Of Old Bombay In The West Village With Anglo-Indian Cuisine
Since the days of dining al fresco are coming to an end, New York thankfully shows no shortage of restaurants to get us excited to be inside. The West Village’s latest hotspot, The Drunken Munkey, offers the perfect tribute to Old Bombay with a fusion of attractive cocktails and tantalizing dishes.
Nestled on the historic Cornelia Street, The Drunken Munkey’s 2nd location in Manhattan offers Anglo-Indian dishes with an East India Cocktail Program that shows us that this culture truly lives on. Anglo-Indian cuisine was developed during the British Raj in India. A hybrid style of dishes involving European classics with an Indian flare filled with rich ingredients, and spices are reworked in this whimsical yet sophisticated restaurant.
Don’t expect the usual curry house at this gem. Drunken Munkey serves a fusion fare brasserie style mirroring the iconic bistros and supper clubs of Old Bombay.
Flavorful meats involving poultry, game, lamb, mutton, beef and pork, along with fresh seasonal vegetables are prepared with an assortment of curries, stews, roasts and broths. All are served with appropriate choices of classic Indian sides. Start with Paneer Tikas, prepared marinated and barbecued with soft artisanal cheese, or the delectable Paani Puri- crispy flour puffs stuffed with potatoes and chick peas and spiced yogurt. Signature specialties include the Classic Tandoori Chicken, and Braised Yorkshire Short-Ribs comprising tomato chutney, and house-smoked mashed potatoes.
Cocktails involve a distinct selection of spirits. Rum and whiskey and an exceptional collection of aperitifs, wine, champagne and ports are offered. Our favorite is the Indian Spiced Old Fashioned that features Lagavulin 16 yr. mist, Old Overheat Rye, Indian-spiced gimme, and bitters with orange and lemon peels. In addition, try the Bramble, which includes Bulldog Gin, Muddled Blackberries, blackberry liqueur and fresh lemon juice.
