The Unveiling of Macy’s Holiday Windows

Signals The Start Of The Holiday Season

The holiday season does not officially begin without the unveiling of story-like window displays. It happens to be one of my favorite things to do in New York during the holidays. It is when the city sparkles, and the energy New York City is known for shines. Growing up in the suburbs you do not experience, or get to appreciate incredible store window displays that can take up to a year to create. Before the time -honored tradition of the Thanksgiving Day Parade, Macy’s Holiday Windows kicked off the festive time of year.

The Herald Square location commenced with a ceremony full of music, and excitement, featuring elves from Macy’s Santaland and Mrs. Claus. On cue, sparklers burst from the windows of the upper floors leading to a flurry of magic into the crowd.

This year’s theme is called, “The Perfect Gift Brings People Together”. Windows along Broadway highlight New York City family traditions and activities that take place during the Christmas season leading up to the night of Santa’s arrival. Take note: Santa is seen by appointment this year!

Skyscrapers, balconies, rooftops and bustling streets are depicted throughout. One scene reveals a family of bears living in a Manhattan high-rise. Another, features Santa Claus skating with penguins in Central Park.

A window highlighting a dollhouse designed to resemble Macy’s opens and closes revealing the inside of the store. Beautiful. Shopping is what brings people together.
