June 4 marks National Cognac Day, an opportunity to honor an outstanding spirit that is appreciated around the world and only produced in the Cognac region of France. Cognac is the point where wine and spirit meet, creating a rich liquid that is both elegant and delicate, round and intense. A key feature in mixtures that was introduced in the late 1800s and early 1900s, this spirit continues to make headway in the bar scene. We have selected the best cognac cocktails to sip on National Cognac Day that involve a new take on classic libations as well as some trendy creations.
Cognac involves aromatic richness and a diversity of styles that makes it an extraordinary grape to sip alone and as a flexible ingredient for mixology. It has charmed imbibers for centuries, due to its heritage, and the uniqueness of the region. For starters, it is aged in wood casks, where special care is taken to protect and nurture the cognacs as they mature and gain more flavor and roundness. While all cognacs are required to age for a minimum of two years, the vast majority of houses and producers let theirs mature longer. This offers a stunning array of aromas and flavor profiles- From light and delicate, to rich and bold, all exceptional. If curious or imbibing cognac for the first time, below are 7 cognac cocktails to try. Or if interested in sipping it neat, as a guide: V.S. (Very Special) features the youngest spirit in the blend, 2 years old. V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale) is where the youngest spirit in the blend is 4 years old, and X.O. (Extra Old) is the where the youngest spirit in the blend is 10 years old. Cheers!
