Celebrate World Sherry Day With These Classic Sherry Based Cocktails

The fortified wine widely used for cooking or viewed as an old bottle nestled in the sitting room of a B&B has stepped into the spotlight over the years. Sherry has become a star libation. Whether it is used as a modifier or as the primary base, it can add complexity, as well as balance bitter, citric, or sweet flavors in a drink. Sherry comes from Spain’s southern region and may only be aged in three towns that make up the Sherry Triangle: Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlucar and El Puerto. The classic ingredient offers incredible diversity- From dry, crisp Fino, to sweet, fruity Pedro Ximenez. As people are discovering more about sherry and incorporating it into mixtures, we decided to round up the best sherry cocktails that happen to be classics, to celebrate the sherry cocktail revolution.

A couple of things to keep in mind when mixing sherry cocktails: Fino can be used in place of dry vermouth for martini cocktails. Olorosos, PX, and Amontillado can be used as a substitute for sweet vermouth, and is quite versatile when working with stirred, shaken, or bold cocktails. And Creams, and Moscatel can be mixed in place of sweet liqueurs and simple syrups.
