New Yorkers Fete Night At The Pier Gala With Entertainment And Moving Stories
Family Equality Council’s 13thannual Night At The Pier Gala was recently held at one of Manhattan’s most amazing venues, Pier Sixty. The evening brought spectacular views of the Hudson. Cocktail hour allowed plenty of time to eye the lineup of silent auction items listed before dinner. Items including a case of Chateau Margot Grand Vin, a one-year membership to Barry’s Bootcamp, and House Seats to Boys in The Band were receiving several bids. The fete raised over $1million for Family Equality Council’s work on behalf of LGBTQ families.
Award-winning journalist and bestselling author Katie Couric was the evening’s Honoree for her efforts in elevating LGBTQ visibility. In her new series for National Geographic, Gender Revolution: A Journey With Katie Couric, Couric observes the roles of science, society and culture with regard to gender and sheds light on stories of struggle, acceptance, ignorance and love. “I’m incredibly honored to receive this award from an organization that was so far ahead of the curve in fighting for the LGBTQ community,” noted Couric. “Family Equality Council has worked tirelessly to change attitudes and policies, and help us rethink what truly defines a family.As Dr. Oz told me after watching Gender Revolution last year: it’s hard to hate up close — the work that Family Equality Council is doing continues to be proof of that.”
The annual event also awarded Dana Rudolph the 2018 Hostetter-Habib Family Award in acknowledgement of her longstanding writing contributions and advocating for LGBTQ parents. Her blog Mombian, has offered a wealth of resources and conversation on the issues central to their lives . In addition to the stories that moved guests, they were also treated to awe-inspiring performances from cast members, including Tony Awards Nominees: Jelani Alladin and John Riddle from Frozen, Erika Henningsen from Mean Girls, and Tony Awards Best Featured Actress nominee Ariana DeBose.
