The Lowline Is Creading The World’s First Public Space Below New York City’s Streets

Manhattan’s Lower East Side is gaining significant support from elected officials, community organizations and celebrities for The Lowline. On Wednesday night actress Lena Dunhan and film director Spike Jonze co-hosted a fundraising Anti-Gala at Skylight Modern, the event space by Lowline co-founder James Ramsey. The Lowline, formally known as Delancey Underground, is a project to draw natural sunlight underground allowing plants and trees to grow while creating the world’s first public space below New York City’s streets. The Lowline is located in the former Williamsburg Bridge Trolley Terminal below Delancey Street. Guests including Ed Norton, Laura Prepon, Senators Cory Booker and Charles Schumer dined while Lowline co-founders James Ramsey and Dan Barasch revealed design updates on their latest project.  “The event mirrored the underground space in design with the help of Terrain, a lifestyle brand known for endless home and garden inspiration on the look and feel, while showcasing the Lowline’s pioneering urban design and focus on unconventional green spaces,” noted Barasch. “We are thrilled to have presented a unique opportunity to New York City and we’re so grateful for the continued support.” The event sponsored by Absolut Vodka, Citi and New York Magazine included an after party with a live performance by Bleachers, with James Murphy of DFA/LCD Soundsystem manning the turntables.
