The Best Drink Pairings For The Dessert-Obsessed
Yes, coffee and donuts go hand in hand but on a Sunday morning there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy a glass of bubbly with a classic glazed or 24-karat gold leaf. Just in time for the holiday season, we were introduced to the best drink pairings for donuts: Sparkling wine! Sparkling wines make for a remarkably good pairing with donuts and their mouthwatering taste, texture, and design.
Our friends from Santa Margherita Wines and new pals from artisanal donut shop, The Salty Donut, invited us to an exclusive holiday pop up at NYC’s Brookfield Place. They teamed up to create special edition donuts to celebrate the launch of Santa Margherita’s two new sparkling wines, Sparkling Rose & Prosecco Superiore DOCG.
A fortunate few patiently waited in line to sample and snap pics. How could you not? Although there was a slight dilemma- these donuts were almost too beautiful to eat. Almost. One delectable featured a 24hr brioche ring, filled with homemade Santa Margherita Sparkling Rose jelly, and Sparkling Rose glaze that was dusted in 24K gold. It was then topped with Sparkling Rose glass and edible pearls.
The other highlighted a 24hr brioche that was scooped out and filled with homemade Santa Margherita Prosecco Superiore jelly and diced strawberries. And that’s not all. It was then topped with a 24K gold-dusted meringue disk, dark chocolate curls, diced strawberries and 24K gold foil.
As for the drink pairings, the Sparkling Rose’s pink hue introduces a refined succession of floral fragrances lifted by white fruits and soft hints of red berry fruits. It is versatile so can easily pair with any style of dessert.
The Prosecco Superiore DOCG is well balanced as it incorporates a clean, fruity bouquet recalling rennet apples and peach blossom. So there you have it. Donuts and sparking wine may not be the most obvious pairing, but who wants to live a predictable life?
