Wednesday night, Italy’s fashion group Max Mara held a private cocktail party at the Top of the Standard to unveil the Max Mara Whitney Bag, created in partnership with the Renzo Piano Building Workshop. The Top of the Standard, or what people still refer to as “The Boom Boom Room”, has one of the best views of the new Whitney Museum of American Art, which opens May 1 at the corner of Gansevoort and Washington Street. The “Whitney Bag” is available in three sizes and colors: black, bordeaux, and tan, and features a light blue-grey color similar to the museum’s metallic façade, as an exclusive collectors’ edition Whitney Bag. It is limited to 250 bags each branded with a numbered logo stamp. It is crafted of soft leather showing distinctive ribbing, reminiscent to the steel tie-beamed exterior of the new Whitney. The buckles, inside pockets and signature snap hook were inspired by the building’s façade, and the handbag’s red lining embodies a characteristic of the Renzo Piano Building Workshop’s designs.
